Games stories

Games Stories The first reading that I read was "what every game developer needs to know about story" by John Sutherland I learned a lot from this reading including that a story is a universal human experience and how to approach a story in a game and what has worked in other story forms. I have also learned that there are a number of places where people go wrong in game stories the most of the problems spring from two basic misunderstandings which are story is dialog and story does not matter but story is partly dialog but story is not conflict. If we want to develop a game into the fairly advanced story form that movies have become for one thing the conflict is part of the structure which means it needs to be planned from the beginning of the development process. The classical story structure is it is simple and it works if you keep the basic structure in your back pocket it will save you a lot of trouble throughout your creative process First there's a protagoni

Alpha

Alpha For this weeks project I have looked at tutorials on how to make a main menu and how to add inventory I feel like this week Unity has just gone against me for everything for some reason when I try to make a panel for the main menu and inventory it will not let me add images to the panel which is a big part of the main menu and inventory so I could not complete this but I have found a main menu tutorial that Jimmy Vegas has done which I have not tried yet because I have spent a lot of time trying to solve some of these problems but could not fix it so hopefully the Jimmy Vegas tutorial on main menus works on my Unity. Inventory main menu I have also tried to add some dialogue to my game but for some reason in the c script it was giving me an error and anytime I fixed it the error came back up so the dialogue was also not working great so you could say I haven't had the best of luck with my Unity today hopefully someone in the year can help me solve this problem so I can

Week 9 progress

Week 9 progress  Looking back I am happy with my progress I have not missed an assignment so far and my overall points are around 320 which I am really pleased with I feel like my routine is okay sometimes I get stuff done a few days before it is due so I do not get stressed out and that other assignments do not clash with these assignments but sometimes I do not have time to do that so I leave it till the day it is due but still get it done on time. I feel like I could have a better routine as I do try to balance assignments, work and social life which is really hard but maybe I could try create a better routine and try stick to it. So far I have not used extra credit options as I did not feel I needed to but if I ever miss an assignment and need extra points I will do the extra credits I do feel like it is a really good idea though. Looking forward  For the second semester I do want to focus on getting my game done and hopefully adding most of the assets I wanted to add from

Review week comments and feedback

Review week comments and feedback feedback in Overall I feel that the comments and feedback are really useful towards making my game I feel that I need the feedback to help me create a good game because I do not play a lot of games and I feel like other people in the year have a better knowledge of games than me so when I get feedback it is really helpful towards me creating game. The comments I am finding most helpful are the ones that are telling me how I can better my game or what I can do to help fix certain aspects in my game that I am having trouble with for example I was having trouble with writing out c script from video tutorials and someone mentioned that sometimes there is links under the tutorials of the c script that I can just copy and paste which was really helpful. Feedback out Overall I feel like most of my comments are hopefully useful to other students I do try to give people feedback if needed but I do also praise their work so my feedback does not seem to h

week 9 reading and writing

Week 9 reading and writing  Overall the reading and writing assignments are going well I have completed all the reading and writing assignments sometimes I do find it hard to keep up with everything because of other assignments and work but overall I find the readings really helpful towards the projects because most of the readings are about game development or game design. My favorite reading would have to be the one about game design on week 3 I learned a lot about multiple types of game design I also learned a lot about game designers and how they are so many things combined into one such as artists, architectures etc with the readings I feel like they help us research different types of game aspects which is really helpful with creating a game and developing it. From reading the readings each week I have got better at skimming through them and remembering the information because at the start of this semester it took me a while to read through them and I kept forgetting what I rea

First playable

First Playable  first player view attached to character For my first playable's I added two players one of them is a character in the first person view which would be the person who is playing the game the other character also walks around but is further away from the first character unless the first person view character walks over to it the characters can also jump, walk, run etc. I also added music to my game to add more effect I picked calm and relaxing music to match the theme of my game.  I also added fruit that can be picked up by the character which took a while because I had to fix the c script a lot as it wouldn't work for me the first time. I also tried to add a menu but for some reason it would not let me add an image the panel so I added the pick up fruit aspect instead. I feel like my game is coming together slowly but surely but I am still getting to know a lot of different aspects in Unity as I am just a beginner so it takes me some time to figure out s

Unity free tutorials

Unity free tutorials Character movement This week I found three tutorials to help me create my game the first tutorial I looked at was creating character movement this tutorial was really helpful I downloaded a character from the asset store I then made a c script to move certain animations attached to the character that I downloaded in the c script I made the character jump which was one of the animations attached to the character I also learned how to get the character to transition to one action to the other which was also really helpful. Audio music I used in the game The second tutorial I looked at was how to add music to my game which was actually really simple I picked a audio that I taught was good and add it into unity I then created an empty game object and add audio to it in the tutorial it also taught me how to add audio to different aspects in the game. pick up and throw objects The third tutorial I looked at was how to pick up and throw objects I downloaded a bo

Game fun

Game fun The first reading that I read was natural funativity by Noah Falstain which was about what makes a game fun he describes how some aspects make a game fun he also talks about underlying reasons for human preferences and behavior he then talks about how we share basic drives of survival we also have a strong dependence on the social interactions that maintain our place in families and communities. He also talks about the science of civilization and how humans lived thousands of years ago to see the survival significance of many of our genetic preferences. He also looks back on modern technology and the trappings of civilization mask or distort the evolutionary sense behind our drives and interests he explains how refined sugar syndrome applies to many things people do for entertainment particularly video games as technology behind them has in effect made possible a concentrated particularly potent play experience that is very new in its expression and very old in its origins.

Prototype

Prototype  For my prototype I made it look like a small village I added houses, trees, grass, flowers, mountains etc I also changed the sky to make it look more realistic and to make it look like there were clouds in the sky which I taught looked really good I also added wind and a first person view so the character can move. prototype before skybox prototype after skybox  Long shot of finished prototype Players view of prototype I really like the overall look of my prototype I think it went well I really enjoyed adding all the assets and making the terrain look more realistic it did take me a while to find assets that I liked but I finally found some houses, trees and flowers I looked at some Jimmy Vegas tutorials to help me to figure out how to add in the grass and trees, to help me create a mountain and to help me create a moving player I also looked at Jimmy Vegas tutorials to help me add in a sky box and to add wind to make it look realistic. I do find it diffi

Unity tutorial week 06

Unity tutorial week 06 In this weeks Unity tutorials by Jimmy Vegas I learned how to change the skybox and how to change the lighting and color to effect the overall theme of the game I also learned how to add wind zone and how to adjust the settings on it to make it look more realistic. I also found out how to take and pick up objects by using c script and how to use fade screens with animation and c script. I also was taught how to erase bugs from the game and how to use fade in and outs using animation. I have also learned how to make the environment look better by adding certain assets to the game to make it look more realistic and to match the theme I also learned how to make certain objects such as a house look more realistic by changing the albedo, smoothness, lighting, texture etc. I enjoyed these tutorials overall but I still do find the c script the hardest part of the tutorials but hopefully I get better overtime I will definitely be using some things that I have learned t
