Games Stories

The first reading that I read was "what every game developer needs to know about story" by John Sutherland I learned a lot from this reading including that a story is a universal human experience and how to approach a story in a game and what has worked in other story forms. I have also learned that there are a number of places where people go wrong in game stories the most of the problems spring from two basic misunderstandings which are story is dialog and story does not matter but story is partly dialog but story is not conflict. If we want to develop a game into the fairly advanced story form that movies have become for one thing the conflict is part of the structure which means it needs to be planned from the beginning of the development process. The classical story structure is it is simple and it works if you keep the basic structure in your back pocket it will save you a lot of trouble throughout your creative process First there's a protagonist a hero, His or her world is thrown out of order by an inciting incident, A gap opens up between the hero and an orderly life, The hero tries the normal, conservative action to overcome the gap. It fails. The world pushes back too hard, the hero then has to take a risk to overcome the obstacles that are pushing back, Then there is a reversal. Something new happens, or the hero learns something she didn't know before, and the world is out of whack again. A second gap has opened up, The hero has to take a greater risk to overcome the second gap, After overcoming the second gap, there is another reversal, opening a third gap, The hero has to take the greatest risk of all to overcome this gap and get to that object of desire, which is usually an orderly life in a three-act classical story this is what happens with more acts you have more obstacles. Characters are a huge part in a story and the characterizations of a character are very important. I have learned a lot from this reading especially that conflict is not part of a story.

The second reading that I have read was "Into the woods: A practical guide to the hero's journey" by Bob Bates in this reading I learned what makes the hero's journey in a story so important and how myths actively guide our actions myths give us our sense of personal identity and they are what lie underneath our moral values. The list of all possible steps in the journey of a hero that appear in a mythical story are establishing the hero's world, the call to adventure, entering the mythological woods, trail of trials, encountering the evil one, gaining the hero's prize and returning that prize to the community. I also learned how we can use the hero's journey to build stories which are pick you premise, create your hero and create a great villain I also learned what not to do to build a hero's journey which are don't look at all the possible steps in the hero's journey and make sure you have got them all in there and in the proper order also do not make a list of all mythological characters and try to find a spot for each of them in your story.

Stories and games- I have learned a lot about stories and games in this additional reading.

Alpha

Alpha For this weeks project I have looked at tutorials on how to make a main menu and how to add inventory I feel like this week Unity has just gone against me for everything for some reason when I try to make a panel for the main menu and inventory it will not let me add images to the panel which is a big part of the main menu and inventory so I could not complete this but I have found a main menu tutorial that Jimmy Vegas has done which I have not tried yet because I have spent a lot of time trying to solve some of these problems but could not fix it so hopefully the Jimmy Vegas tutorial on main menus works on my Unity. Inventory main menu I have also tried to add some dialogue to my game but for some reason in the c script it was giving me an error and anytime I fixed it the error came back up so the dialogue was also not working great so you could say I haven't had the best of luck with my Unity today hopefully someone in the year can help me solve this problem so I can ...

Project

Project  After many trials and errors I have final got a somewhat working main menu for my game it will still not let me add images but luckily from one of the asset packages I downloaded there was a sprite that had a menu title on it which will do for now until I figure out how to add images to my main menu I tried adding a cube and tried adding a image to that but that did not work either but I am happy with what I got so far even though it did take a while to figure everything out because it would not let me add my script to the buttons on my menu for no reason at all because I had no errors in my script but I will get it working eventually. Anyway I am happy that I finally got a somewhat working menu done. main menu. buttons and main menu. trying to add cube to add image as background.
